ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT OF THE SITE
ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT – PHASE I
CONSTITUCION, ARAUCO AND FIBERBOARD & PARTICLE BOARD PLANT FACILITIES
The Project Identified the Potential Environmental Conditions at the Constitucion Pulp Mill, Arauco Plant Complex (Nursery, Storage Yard, Logging Plant, Horcones I and II Sawmills, Panel Plant, Remanufacturing Plant and Pulp Mill) and Fiberboard and Particle Board Plants.
The Project included a review of the written records related to the management of raw materials and waste and a field survey to inspect the condition of the facilities and operations associated with environmental components. The survey was focused on identifying potential risks to human health and the environment and how they were managed at industrial sites. The Project produced recommendations on how to focus resources on environmental management actions.
MONITORING SYSTEMS
DESIGN AND EXECUTION OF MONITORING SYSTEM
CELULOSA ARAUCO WASTE DUMP
The Project envisaged the design and development of a Groundwater Monitoring Program in order to contribute information to identify and characterize potential impact on the groundwater quality of the most superficial aquifer downstream from the facilities. The objective of the Project was to comply with the requirements contained in the Closure Plan of the Celulosa Arauco Industrial Waste Dump.
The Project included hydraulic tests, sampling and analysis of twelve monitoring wells. Likewise, the Project provided background information to qualitatively and quantitatively characterize the potential risk to humans and the environment. Based on the above information, it was possible to define the measures necessary to prevent environmental impact and risks associated with the facilities.
